Bank Statement Audit: How to Find Every Recurring Charge in 20 Minutes
A methodical way to go through your statements once and actually catch everything, instead of skimming and missing half of it.
Most people who try to "check their bank statement for subscriptions" skim it once, catch the obvious ones, and miss the rest — not because they weren't paying attention, but because skimming isn't a method, it's just looking.
Why skimming misses things
Small, irregular-looking charges don't pattern-match visually to "subscription" the way a big obvious Netflix charge does. A $4.99 app charge, a $12 "membership fee" from a company you don't remember signing up with, a $2.99 "processing fee" that repeats — these blend into a long list of transactions unless you're specifically looking for repetition, not size.
The actual method
Pull two to three months of statements, not just one — a single month can miss anything billed less frequently than monthly. Sort or scan by amount rather than date, since recurring charges tend to repeat at the exact same amount each time. Anything that appears more than once at an identical (or near-identical) dollar figure is almost certainly recurring, whether you recognize the merchant name or not.
The merchant name problem
Recurring charges often show up under a billing processor's name or an abbreviated company name that doesn't match what you'd search for — "SQ *SOMENAME" or a shortened version of an app you use. If you don't recognize a repeating charge, search the exact text as it appears on the statement before assuming it's unfamiliar or fraudulent; a lot of legitimate subscriptions look unrecognizable this way.
After the audit
The whole point of doing this once carefully is not having to do it as a full forensic exercise again. Once every recurring charge is identified and moved into a tracker with its real name, amount, and cycle, the next check is a five-minute glance at a dashboard instead of another 20-minute statement archaeology project.
