Streaming services launched with a clear pitch: cheaper than cable, no contract, cancel anytime. A decade-plus in, prices have crept up steadily and quietly enough that a lot of people are still budgeting for what these services cost several years ago, not what they actually charge now.

Why the creep is easy to miss

Price increases on subscriptions you're already paying for rarely come with a dramatic announcement. It's a line in an email you don't read closely, or just a slightly higher charge you don't notice because you're not comparing it to last month's statement.

The compounding effect

One streaming service going up $2-3/month feels trivial. Four or five services each doing that, plus a couple of ad-tier "upgrades" you didn't ask for, adds up to a genuinely different number than what you signed up expecting to pay — and it happened gradually enough that there was never one moment that felt worth reacting to.

What to actually do about it

- Check what you're currently being charged for each streaming service against what you remember agreeing to originally. The gap is usually bigger than expected. - Consider rotating services instead of holding all of them simultaneously — subscribe for the month a show you want airs, cancel after you finish it, resubscribe later. Nothing about "cancel anytime" stopped being true; people just stopped exercising it. - Track the renewal dates and amounts somewhere visible, specifically because price increases don't reset your attention — you have to actually look at the number, not assume it's the same as when you signed up.

The "streaming is cheaper than cable" pitch was true when there were three services. It's a genuinely different math problem now that most households are juggling five or six.
